Certification Levels
As some of you know, I am on the ICC Permit Technician Education Development Committee (EDC). Last month a phone conference was held and the discussion continued about creating a second level of certification for the Permit Technician. Suggested questions submitted by other board members to the ICC Board for International Professional Standards (BIPS) included questions that compared the exam to that of a Residential Plans Examiner exam. BIPS unanimously declined the need to create a 2nd level of certification. "Certification is unnecessary at this time and adequate expansion can be obtained through different career paths."

The Code Council’s Ad Hoc Permit Technician Committee hosted a well-visited booth at the Code Council’s Expo in Minneapolis during the Annual Conference. The booth was provided by the Code Council to help the committee raise awareness of their profession.

Sponsored by the Code Council permit technician chapters, each was represented at the booth through various flyers and complimentary items that were distributed to the attendees. Two cash prize drawings were awarded to Pete Wilt, President of the Southern New Mexico Building Officials Association from the City of Clovis and William Dumbaugh, Past President of the Building Officials Association of Florida from Broward County. The money for the drawings was provided by the Colorado Association of Permit Technicians.

The “got Permit Techs?” slogan was borrowed with permission from the Washington State Association of Permit Technicians who will be using this theme during their 2008 Fall Conference.

Other chapters represented at the booth included the Kansas City Metro Association of Permit Technicians, Minnesota Building Permit Technicians Association (MBPTA), New Jersey Association of Technical Assistants, North Central Texas Permit Technicians Chapter (NCTPTC), Oregon Permit Technicians Association (OPTA) and the permit technician committee of Central Ohio Code Officials Association.

The Atlanta Metro Permit Technician Association (AMPTA) received chapter status from the Code Council’s Board of Directors on September 13, making it the eighth Council chapter serving the permit technician profession. The chapter’s goal is to provide, support and promote education through networking, certification, professionalism and recognition of membership. AMPTA President Jammie Newsome from the City of Kennesaw, Georgia, and a coworker attended a seminar hosted by the Kansas City Metro Association of Permit Technicians in the spring of 2007, and returned home with the goal of starting their own local group. AMPTA held its first meeting in February 2008 with 14 attendees from five local jurisdictions; the chapter now has 36 members spanning 10 counties and seven jurisdictions.

Well, chat box is just for general chit-chat. The forums & discussions area is the best form of e-mail replacements as it captures the entire discussion in 1 place vice several e-mails.

Our Department in the City of Decatur has gone to 4 / 10s, but the office itself is open 5 days a week, the staff has a staggered schedule. Working well so far!

We already do 10 hour work days, but its not cause of the gas prices, its because of staff shortage vs workload. But if you think about it, thats a great idea to save 1 days trip of gas

Jill Gray
09 Jun : 10:08
Are any City's thinking about going to four 10 hour work days due to high gas prices?

Its still here. The info on what you need to do to become a Permit Tech is located in the menu under "Permit Technician Information". For the practice tests, you must be a member and logged in to access it however, it is under the Chapter members Area of the menu under Online Practice Tests. It hasn't moved, is in the same place.

I was looking for the information that used to be on this sight. A place where a permit tech can take practice test & get information about being or becoming certified. Where did it go & can I still get to it?
